Transform boundaries is when the tectonic plates slide against each other. The motion of the two plates is either sinistral (the left side toward the observer) or dextral (the right side toward the observer). They do not create or destroy any lithosphere.
Most transform boundaries occur in the ocean, where they offset spreading ridges creating a zig zag pattern between the plates. Transform boundaries on the land cause earthquakes and the most common one is the San Andreas Fault in California, which displays a dextral motion.
